Kinder Surprise - the original ‘blind box’

I like many over the past year have become infatuated with blind bags and blind box’s. Typically containing a pin, a toy or a stuffed animal - it’s a bag or box that displays on one of its sides a list of all of the things you might get when you open the box.

Every year my parents put a Kinder Surprise egg in my stocking and my brothers stocking (I love that they still do that even though we’re adults) and this year was no exception. As I was enjoying my Kinder chocolate and assembling the toy I realized that a Kinder Surprises is a “blind box”, or in this case a “blind egg” and they’ve been around since the mid 1970’s! I have such fond memories of my parents selling them in our families gift shop and how we displayed the Kinder toys we opened and built above the till.

A Kinder Surprise woolly mammoth figurine posed in a breakdancing move on a snow base, wearing an orange toque and orange sunglasses with yellow lenses, with the orange Kinder Surprise egg placed to the right.
